Anti-Wrinkle Injections

What are Anti Wrinkle Injections?

Botulinum toxin is a naturally occurring protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum.

In its purified form, Botulinum Toxin is a very safe and effective treatment not only used in cosmetic treatments but medical treatments such as excessive sweating, migraine, neck spasms, correcting squints, and overactive bladder.

How do anti-wrinkle injections work?

The toxin blocks chemical messages sent from the nerve to the muscle, telling the muscle to contract. The aim of treatment is to significantly reduce the movement of those muscles which cause lines to appear during facial expression (such as smiling, grinning, frowning, and the startled look).

Without these chemical messages, the muscle stays in a relaxed, resting state. As the muscles are not contracting (squeezing) and stay relaxed, they do not make lines and wrinkles in the skin. Without these messages, the muscles stay in a relaxed state until the messengers recover.

How long do the effects of the injections last?

The effects of all the anti-wrinkle injections are temporary. The messengers tend to recover over 8 to 12 weeks on average, and so results tend to last 3 to 4 months, though movement will begin recovering from 8 weeks.

What areas can be treated with the anti-wrinkle injections?

  • Frown Lines
  • Crow's Feet
  • Forehead Lines
  • Bunny Lines
  • Lip Lines
  • Turkey Neck (Neck Bands)
  • Jawline(Nefertiti Lift)
  • Slimming of Jaw Muscles (Masseters)
  • Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating)

Though widely used in cosmetic medicine and with an extensive evidence base to support safety and efficacy, ACE group cites that Botulinim toxin A brands, Botox®, Azzalure® and Bocouture® are licensed for the treatment of frown lines; Botox® and Azzalure® are also licensed for the treatment of crow's feet.

All other indications are, for the time being, 'off label', i.e. being used beyond the terms of the original license. Many drugs are routinely used off label. Please discuss with your practitioner if you have any concerns and they will be happy to explain further.

Such injections are not suitable for those lines that are present when not making facial expressions.

Does having the anti-wrinkle injections hurt?

A very fine needle is used and generally this treatment is not painful and is often well tolerated without anaesthetic cream.

Are anti-wrinkle injections safe?

All botulinum toxins are prescription only medicines and can only be prescribed by medical prescribers following an in-person assessment and consultation with the said prescriber.

Anti-wrinkle injections are not suitable for everyone and Dr Amina will decide the best course of treatment for your needs. Occasionally, what you may think needs botulinum toxin may in actual fact need a different treatment to achieve the result you require.

All treatments carry a degree of risk and complications. Prior to any treatment these will be discussed with you at the risk and suitability consultation, based on your medical history and assessment.

Potential side effects include, but are not limited to:

  • Bruising
  • Swelling and or redness at injection sites
  • Allergic reaction
  • Asymmetry of expression
  • Brow/eyelid drooping
  • Headaches or a tight/heavy head feeling

Anti-wrinkle injections should be administered by a healthcare professional with the specialist training that Dr Amina has. Dr Amina has had extensive training in aesthetics, under a range of specialists including plastic surgeons and has studied to an advanced level and masters level qualifications.

Adverse events are uncommon, especially when the practitioner is highly trained. Such adverse events usually occur within a few days to weeks of treatment and are expected to be temporary, usually resolving spontaneously within weeks.

Dr Amina will provide aftercare advice designed to minimise risk and promote speedy recovery from any expected side effects.
